To cover a color you need to create a closed shape. By moving outside the covered area and then back to your colored area.
If you are moving out of the covered area, you need to be careful because your opponent will take you down by moving into it. So to be safe, you should not move too far from your covered area. You should expand the range slowly little by little.
You can seize the opportunity to take down your opponent when you see them moving out of their covered area. Get to their area before they come back to form a closed line. This way the opponent will be destroyed and you will collect XP and gold coins.
