Xess.io is a multiplayer strategy game inspired by chess but expanded into a massive, fast-paced battlefield accommodating multiple players.
Xess.io's unique feature lies in its much larger board size compared to traditional chess. The Classic mode uses a 64x64 board, creating ample space for pieces to move, approach opponents, and create various strategic situations.
You still need to rely on the familiar movement patterns of the pieces, but the lack of traditional turn limits makes the game more dynamic. The ability to observe the entire board and make quick decisions becomes crucial for survival.
Xess.io offers more modes than Master Chess, with different board sizes and rules allowing you to choose the mode that suits your style.
Classic is the basic mode with a 64x64 board and no power-ups. This is a suitable option to get acquainted with the movement mechanics, large board layout, and pace of Xess.io.
Powerup Zone expands the board to 80x80 and adds special pawns. These power-ups are hidden inside pawns and are only discovered when they are captured, adding an element of surprise to each match.
Some types of power-ups include Timer Pawns, Guard Pawns, and Sensor Pawns, each offering a different tactical advantage.
If you want to practice before facing other players, Bot Chaos is a worthwhile option. This mode allows you to battle bots on an 80x80 board and still has power-ups, providing more unpredictable situations.
Tiny brings Xess.io back to the familiar 8x8 board. However, this mode still has its own changes, such as some pieces being pre-placed on the board and a 3-second limit per move, making the game significantly faster.
Speedy uses a 12x12 board and is geared towards fast-paced games. The smaller space allows pieces to quickly approach each other, so you need to react quickly and avoid ill-calculated moves.
Xess.io uses mouse controls to select and move pieces. You simply select the piece you want to move, then choose the appropriate target square to make the move.
When playing on a large board, frequently observe the surrounding area instead of focusing only on one group of pieces. Early detection of approaching opponents will give you more time to adjust your strategy.
The large board allows for many situations to occur simultaneously. Before each move, check the position of the king and other important pieces to avoid being caught off guard.
Don't just focus on capturing pieces. A captured piece isn't always an advantage if it exposes your king's position. Consider the value of the move to the overall game instead of just looking at the number of captured pieces.
Classic is suitable for getting acquainted with the large board, while Powerup Zone and Bot Chaos add more elements of surprise. If you want to practice reflexes and speed, Tiny or Speedy will put more time pressure on you.
